How long customs actually takes at JFK
JFK has a long-standing reputation for the worst customs queues in the United States. We tested it against CBP's own hourly reporting for 14 major gateways, and JFK ranks 3rd, not first. It also processes more arriving passengers than any other airport on the list, by a wide margin.

These are not live figures. CBP publishes on roughly a two-day lag, so this is what immigration has actually taken, hour by hour, not what the queue is doing right now. For a live number, CBP's own airport wait times is the source everyone including us reads.
Does JFK really have the worst customs waits in the country?
No. JFK ranks 3rd of 14 on mean immigration wait across the window, behind Orlando and Seattle. Orlando averages 29.4 minutes against JFK's 20.7.
The context that ranking hides: JFK processed 4,303,877 arriving passengers in this window, 1.5 times the next busiest airport on the list (Miami, at 2,946,997). The two airports ahead of it handle a fraction of that traffic.

Ranked on wait alone JFK looks middling. Ranked on wait per passenger handled it looks considerably better than its reputation. Either way, the number that decides your own queue is not the airport.
Why does your passport change the wait so much?
CBP processes US and non-US passport holders through separate queues and reports them separately, and at JFK a non-US passport means 29.3 minutes against 12.4, roughly 2.4 times the wait. That gap of 16.9 minutes is larger than the difference between most of the airports in the table above.
The pattern holds everywhere, not just here. The widest gap on the list is Seattle, at 36.1 minutes against 15.2. If you are arriving on a non-US passport, the headline average for any airport understates your queue, and the terminal you land in matters more than you would expect.
Which JFK terminal has the longest immigration queue?
Terminal 1 has the longest mean wait at JFK, at 27 minutes, and Terminal 5 (Jet Blue) the shortest at 13.2. That is roughly double, at the same airport, on the same days.

What time of day is immigration worst at JFK?
Early morning, and it differs by terminal. The peak hour is not the same building to building, which is why a single airport-wide figure is close to useless for planning:
- Terminal 1: worst around 11am at 38.4 minutes, quietest around 1am at 13.8 minutes.
- Terminal 4: worst around 6am at 33.1 minutes, quietest around 10pm at 10.8 minutes.
- Terminal 5: worst around 7am at 17.4 minutes, quietest around noon at 7.3 minutes.
- Terminal 7: worst around 3pm at 30.5 minutes, quietest around 9pm at 12.4 minutes.
- Terminal 8: worst around 6am at 33.8 minutes, quietest around 6pm at 16.6 minutes.
Meeting someone off an international flight? The landing time is not the come-out time, and this is the queue that sits between them: clearing immigration at JFK walks the whole sequence, and the free waiting options are on parking at JFK compared.
Why do other sites quote much longer waits?
Published estimates for JFK customs commonly run 30 to 90 minutes, which is well above the 20.7-minute mean in CBP's own data. Both can be true at once, and the reason is the distribution rather than a disagreement about facts.
The tail is long. The worst single hour recorded at JFK in this window was 207 minutes, and a bad arrival bank on a bad day genuinely produces the queues people describe. But the typical hour is nothing like that, and an average built from the memorable experiences rather than from all the hours will always overstate it. Ours is the mean of every reported hour, including the quiet ones.
What this data does not tell you
It is not live, and it is not your flight. CBP reports on roughly a two-day lag, so nothing here describes the queue you are standing in. It also measures immigration only: the walk from the gate, the baggage belt and the customs hall beyond passport control are all outside it, and at JFK those add up.
One reporting gap worth naming: the entry CBP lists for Delta at JFK returned no data in any window we tested, so it is excluded rather than shown as a zero. Terminal-level figures come from the five terminal entries that do report.
How this was measured
Every figure comes from US Customs and Border Protection's Airport Wait Times reporting, which publishes hourly passenger counts and wait times per airport terminal, split by passport type. It is US federal public-domain data. We aggregated 2026-05-24 to 2026-08-19 and dropped any airport with fewer than 200 reported hours rather than rank it on thin data.
Numbers on this page are generated from the dataset at build time rather than typed in, so the prose cannot drift from the data when it regenerates.
