What to do on a JFK layover

A layover at JFK splits into one decision: do you leave the airport or not. Everything else follows from that. Here is how to make the call honestly, and what each option actually looks like.

Can you leave the airport during a layover at JFK?

You can leave if you are legally admissible to the United States and you have cleared immigration, which international arrivals do on landing rather than at the end of a connection. That part is usually settled before you are even thinking about it.

We are not going to tell you the number of hours that makes it safe, because there is not one. It depends on your arrival terminal, how long immigration took, traffic in both directions, and your airline's check-in cutoff, which is earlier than the departure time and is the deadline that actually matters. Sites that publish "you need six hours" are guessing on your behalf about a decision where being wrong means missing a flight.

What you can check is concrete: whether your onward flight is still on schedule, on all JFK departures right now, and whether JFK is having a bad day at all, on how JFK is running today. A ground stop changes this decision more than any rule of thumb.

Where do you leave your luggage?

You leave luggage at the staffed Smartecarte storage desks: Level 1 of the Terminal 4 Arrivals Hall, open 24 hours, or near Arrivals on Level 1 of Terminal 1. Do this first if you are leaving. Dragging a suitcase around New York for six hours is the thing people regret, and it is the cheapest problem on this page to solve.

Can you get a hotel room for a few hours?

You can. The TWA Hotel at Terminal 5 sells day rooms without an overnight stay: its Daytripper rooms book in blocks of four hours or more, between 6am and 8pm ET. It also holds luggage free for up to five hours either side of a stay.

What if you are staying airside?

Staying airside means the lounge question, and it has more answers than a business class ticket. Access can come from your fare, airline status, a credit card, a Priority Pass membership, or a paid day pass where one is sold. Which of those opens a door depends entirely on your terminal, and Terminal 7 in particular has no Priority Pass lounge at all.
